Medstead Players - 'The Trial of the Wolf' - December 2000

Written by David Rae, Paul Cox & Nick Cooper
Directed by David Rae

It was during a break in rehearsals for "Robin Hood", our pantomime in 1998, that Nick Cooper, Paul Cox & David Rae decided that it might be fun to write a pantomime for the Medstead Players for the year 2000. Foolishly, they mentioned it to the committee who thought it was a great idea, and before they knew where the time had gone, they had to get down to work and produce something.

They had an idea for a plot, which would involve well-known scenes from a number of pantomimes held together by a trial, where a traditional "baddie" would be asked to account for his actions. The audience would be the Jury (eat your heart our Jeffrey Archer). They came up with "The Trial of the Wolf". Nick dreamt up the plot line, lyrics added by Paul and the dialogue by David. The whole thing was refined at regular script sessions in 'The Castle of Comfort'.

While the story is not a traditional pantomime, they tried to keep in step with tradition with a Dame, some slapstick, a lot of audience participation and some humour to make the audience groan and laugh a bit too.
