Medstead Players overcome 'blackout' problem

The Medstead Players production, 'Something to Hide', a thriller by Leslie Sands, was full of surprises - not least being the sudden fusing of all the theatre lights during the last act. After much scurrying backwards and forwards, the fault was only partially rectified and the last scene was carried out with all the houselights on and the stage in semi darkness.

That the players were able to perform in the face of this reversal of normal lighting, speaks highly of their versatility and self confidence.

The plot of the story is very thin and improbable, with additional twists and red herrings coming with confusing frequency.

Stan Whitcher, the police Inspector, gave an impeccable performance as he weaved his tortuous way through a maze of false trails. His relaxed and easy manner was well maintained throughout and was pleasant to watch.

Ron Whitcher, the double-crossing villain of the piece, gained confidence as the play progressed and was full of fire and invective in the final showdown with his wife, spendidly played by Lyn Hayden.

This was only Lyn's second appearance with the Players and she carried through this major role with great assurance.

Julie Grant, around whose disappearance and possible murder the play revolved, was played very effectively by Sara Cook.

I liked Kerry Yarnley as the fussy little Miss Cunningham whose habit of peeping through drawn curtains frustrated the first of the many plots.

The two newcomers, Mike Overy and Katharine Reader, carried out their minor roles very competently.

The direction by Mike Clapham was slick and well conducted, though I thought that the opening clinch of the villain and his girl friend was too subdued to be realistic.

The one stage set was simple and adequate giving the correct impression of comfort and affluence. [NHC]
